 1970 – 1979 Há quem diga que o momento mais emocionante da história da premiação tenha acontecido nos anos 70. Na tentativa de corrigir uma injustiça, a Academia entregou, em 1972, um Oscar Honorário a Charles Chaplin – o mais emblemático ator das primeiras décadas do cinema americano. Ainda exilado na Europa, havia uma grande expectativa de que seu retorno aos Estados Unidos fosse permitido. Ele deixou o país devido à perseguições políticas, acusado de “atividades anti-americanas”. Ao voltar a Hollywood, recebeu o aplauso mais longo da história da cerimônia – todos de pé batendo palmas por cinco minutos. Outro episódio marcante nos anos 70 foi a recusa de Marlon Brando em receber o prêmio de Melhor Ator por sua brilhante interpretação de Don Vito Corleone, em O Poderoso Chefão. Defensor dos índios norte-americanos, Brando não aceitou a estatueta em 1973 por achar que Hollywood estereotipava demais a raça. Em seu lugar, mandou uma índia para receber o prêmio e ler um discurso em prol dos indígenas. Mais tarde, descobriu-se que a “índia” era na verdade uma atriz contratada por Brando. Dois anos antes desse acontecimento, outro grande ator também se recusou a receber seu prêmio. O protagonista de Patton, Rebelde ou Herói? , George C. Scott, não aceitou o Oscar de Melhor Ator sob a alegação de que ele não competia com nenhum ator. Ele já havia batido o pé anos antes ao ser indicado por seu papel em The Hustler. Não chegou a vencer, mas desde o início recusava a indicação por não achar saudável a competição entre atores.
